Burna Boy has bragged about being “one of the greatest singers in the world”.
The award-winning Afrofusion singer was responding to his inclusion on Rolling Stone’s list of ‘200 best singers in the world’ during an interview with Aria Nejati, Apple’s head of Hip Hop in Germany.
The 34-year-old music star said while the recognition felt good, it was not a surprise to him, as he has always considered himself to be “among the world’s greatest singers”.
“I mean, it’s great. Like it felt really good, you know. But at the end of the day, I always felt I was one of the greatest singers in the world, so they weren’t telling me anything new,” he said.
The ‘Ye’ hitmaker also disclosed that whenever he reveals his Nigerian nationality to people abroad, their immediate response is, “Do you know Burna Boy?”
He shared that these encounters have made him realise the weight of the responsibility he carries on the African music scene.
“Not really. Just to the point that people start calling me. The only thing they say when I tell them I am Nigerian is ‘Do you know Burna Boy?’ I did not really understand what that meant. How deep did that mean? The responsibility that I carried. That need that Burna Boy has to live up to that,” he said.
“The first question everybody asks anyone who is from Nigeria is ‘Do you know Burna Boy?’ That means Burna Boy cannot sleep off. That is really the only thing.”
Born Damini Ogulu, Burna Boy gained fame after releasing ‘Like to Party’, the lead single from his debut album ‘L.I.F.E’ (2013).
Since breaking into the mainstream, he has established himself as one of Africa’s most successful artistes, known for his genre-blending style and chart-topping albums.
He has released a plethora of albums, including ‘L.I.F.E’ (2013), ‘On a Spaceship’ (2015), ‘Outside’ (2018), ‘African Giant’ (2019), ‘Twice As Tall‘ (2020), ‘Love, Damini‘ (2022) and ‘I Told Them‘ (2023).
In 2021, the Afro-fusion artiste won the ‘Best World Music Album’ category at the Grammy Awards for ‘Twice As Tall’.
In July, the singer released his eighth studio album titled ‘No Sign of Weakness’.
Burna Boy revealed that the album’s title reflects his resilience in overcoming life’s toughest challenges.
