Gunmen have reportedly killed Ruth Yakadi, a student of the University of Jos (UNIJOS), after raping her.

Alfred Alabo, the Plateau state commissioner of police, confirmed her death to TheCable Lifestyle on Monday.

“Yes, we have already confirmed the incident”, he said.

The police spokesperson, however, declined further comment on the matter as he ended the phone conversation abruptly.

It is understood that Yakadi was a 400-level student of English at UNIJOS.

It was further gathered that the student recently completed her undergraduate project and was waiting to be mobilised for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.

Her death was said to have occurred in Farin-Gada community on Saturday night.

The student’s corpse was also said to have been discovered in the early hours of Sunday, sparking panic and outrage in the community.

Residents of the area aggrieved by the incident were said to have staged a protest to demand for justice.

It was gathered that suspected hoodlums hijacked the protest and attacked traders and passersby in the area.

As of the time of this report, the institution has not reacted to the demise of the student.

The development further stretches the cases of rape recorded in tertiary institution’s across the country.
