French actor Gerard Depardieu is currently on trial in a Paris criminal court for allegedly sexually assaulting two women on the set of the film ‘Les Volets Verts (The Green Shutters)’ in 2021.
The two women — a 54-year-old set dresser and a 34-year-old assistant director — accused Depardieu of groping them, touching them inappropriately, and making obscene comments while on set.
Gerard however denied the allegations. He argued in an open letter to the French daily Le Figaro, “Never, but never, have I abused a woman”.
Jeremie Assous, his lawer, also dismissed the allegations as “completely fabricated”.
The trial was initially scheduled for October 2024 but was postponed due to Depardieu’s health issues, including diabetes and quadruple bypass surgery.
The trial is expected to last two days, with Depardieu’s court appearances limited to six hours per day, with breaks as needed.
This is not the first time Gerard has faced sexual assault accusations. He has previously been accused of misconduct by about 20 women, though none of those cases went to trial.
In 2020, Depardieu was also charged with raping actress Charlotte Arnould, an accusation he has denied, and that case remains open and ongoing.
Gerard is one of France’s most prolific and famous actors. He has starred in over 200 films, including ‘Green Card’, ‘The Man in the Iron Mask’, and ‘Life of Pi’. He was nominated for an Oscar in 1991 for his role in ‘Cyrano de Bergerac’.
