Wizkid has asked the public not to refer to him as an Afrobeats artiste in a fresh rant on Instagram.
In a series of posts on his Instastories on Friday night, the Grammy-winning Nigerian singer announced his new album titled ‘Morayo’.
The ‘Ojuelegba’ hitmaker, however, warned the public that the project is not for Afrobeats lovers — including fans of ‘Pakurumo’, his 2011 hit song.
The singer also denounced the music genre while asking his followers not to refer to him as an “Afrobeats artiste”.
“Album name ‘Morayo’ best I ever made. I am not an Afrobeats artistes. Don’t call me that,” he wrote.
“If you like Afrobeats please don’t download my album, I’m not Afro anything.
“And please if you like ‘Pakuromo’ Wizkid, don’t like this album. In fact, delete me from your playlist and life.”
Wizkid also strongly warned “bloggers”, asking them not to “post my new album when it drops”.
The motives for the outburst remain unknown.
Afrobeats is one of Africa’s biggest exports. The music genre began to experience widespread mainstream acclaim in the late 2010s.
In 2023, Afrobeats enjoyed massive global recognition, with top Nigerian artistes like Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy — among others — gracing the stages of some of the biggest events and occasions worldwide.
With a huge fanbase, several awards, and honorary mentions, Wizkid is a global brand.
In November, the singer hinted that he was on a five-year hiatus from music.
Wizkid, however, put out the second installment of ‘Soundman‘, his extended play (EP), in December.
