Davido came through with ‘Timeless‘, his much-anticipated album, on Friday, to the excitement of music lovers. While fans thronged streaming platforms to have a taste of the Afrobeats star’s offerings, an impersonator is on the prowl, benefiting from the project.

Davido VMW prides himself as a “Canadian-born singer, producer, and instrumentalist”. His stage name is also an imitation of the Afrobeats star’ moniker.

‘VMW’ also raised eyebrows following the similarities he created between himself and Davido. Aside from using Davido’s stage name, he also stylishly adopted the abbreviation of Davido Music Worldwide (DMW), the megastar’s record label.

Last week, the artiste released an extended play (EP) titled ‘Timeless’. The EP was released at about the same time that Davido announced ‘Timeless’, his fourth studio album.

Although the songs in both tracklists are different, noticeable is the artwork for VMW’s ‘Timeless’ EP which bears a striking resemblance to Davido’s.

This is not the first time VMW would be patterning himself after Davido.

On April 30, 2021, the artiste shared an album titled ‘A Best Time’. The project was released five months after Davido came through with  ‘A Better Time’, his third studio album, on November 13, 2020.

As of Friday, VMW’s ‘A Best Time’ has raked in over one million streams on Audiomack while ‘Timeless’ is garnering thousands of YouTube views

VMW is also guilty of using the names of other prominent Nigerian singers to promote his songs on streaming platforms.

He once gave the public the impression that he partnered with Olamide and Reminisce in a 2021 track titled ‘Omo X 100’ — when, in fact, they weren’t featured in the song.

It, however, remains to be seen how long VMW has been deliberately redirecting Davido’s fans to his accounts on streaming platforms, hence making money off the ‘OBO’crooner.

This is also not the first time famed musicians will be subject to imitators on streaming platforms.

In 2021, the up-and-coming artiste named Wisekid triggered curiosity on social media after he disclosed statistics that prompted allegations he made about N30 million monthly from cloning Made In Lagos‘, a 2020 music album by Wizkid.
