Barcelona’s 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League (UEFA), prison slippers and COVID-19 prevention were among the searches that dominated Google Nigeria trends for August 2020.

The search giant, which routinely puts together search metrics in every country, stated this in a statement on Wednesday.

The statement revealed that the football match was the most-searched in Nigeria over the past month, while inquiry about how to prevent the coronavirus pandemic came second.

It also explained that the most esoteric among the top searches for August was undoubtedly prison slippers.

The term became an internet sensation after Nigerians were called out for paying more than N21,000 for Yeezy Slides, the slippers created by Kanye West, American rapper, which many likened to footwear worn by prisoners.

Other notable topics on the search engine include ‘WAEC 2020 timetable’, ‘Twice As Tall’, an album by Burna Boy, and ‘Buruji Kashamu’ — following the demise of the former senator from Ogun state.

According to the statement, top questions for the month on the search engine include those bordering on finance including “how to make money online”.

This was followed by “when is school returning,” and “when is school resuming in Nigeria” respectively.

Google said baking was another major trend for the past month, with “how to make pancakes” and “how to make a cake” among the most asked questions.

It added that a deeper level “who is the world best man” was an interesting feature among the most asked questions for the month.
