Covenant University has been ranked the best university in Nigeria by Times Higher Education (THE).

The rankings, which were released on Wednesday at Times Higher Education’s World Academic Summit at the National University of Singapore, included only three Nigerian universities.

A total of 1250 universities were ranked on the list.

According to a statement on its website, THE said it used 13 performance indicators which are placed under five categories.

“The performance indicators are grouped into five areas: teaching (the learning environment); research (volume, income and reputation); citations (research influence); international outlook(staff, students and research); and industry income (knowledge transfer),” the statement read.

Covenant University, a private university owned by Winners Chapel, was ranked 636.

The University of Ibadan was ranked 677, an improvement from the 2017 and 2018 rankings where it fell in the 800-1000 range.

University of Nigeria, Nsukka was ranked 1161.

Data provided by THE showed that Covenant University has 9,369; the University of Ibadan, 25,426 and University of Nigeria, Nsukka, 32,429.

THE releases the rankings a year ahead of the actual year, thus naming its 2019 best university in 2018.

In its 2017 and 2018 rankings, UI was ranked in the 800-1000 bracket
