Osuagwu Magnus, a medical doctor, says that constant drinking of cold water can slow down the heart and cause some diseases in the body.

In an interview with NAN, Magnus, who works with the Dalhatu Araf specialist hospital (DASH) in Lafia, Nasarawa state, said that drinking cold water can adversely affect the heart and digestive system.

He said while drinking cold water during the heat period is good, constant consumption can have adverse effect hence the need to reduce consumption.

“Drinking cold water has a way of bringing down the body temperature. It has a way of slowing down the heart. It causes the blood to clot. That means the blood becomes thick and not able to flow freely through the organs.”

Having blood clots in certain parts of the body can be dangerous.

According to experts, if blood clots in the vein that carries blood to the heart, lungs or brain, the victim may suffer a heart attack or stroke.

The consultant said the normal human body was accustomed to temperatures between 34oC and 37oC.

He said that those who regularly consume cold water “may experience shock which can lead to some diseases due to the sudden change in temperature levels.”

Magnus also advised Nigerians to avoid extreme hot temperature which according to him was not good to human body.
