Angelique Kidjo, the Grammy-winning Beninese singer-songwriter, says she has so many enemies because she is a very “blunt” person.
The ‘Wombo Lombo’ crooner spoke during a recent Instagram live session with Burna Boy, the Nigerian music heavyweight.
Kidjo complimented Burna Boy for the way he performed his own version of her 1996 hit song ‘Wombo Lombo’.
The ‘Anybody’ crooner thereafter appreciated the Beninese singer, saying he is “blushing” — prompting Kidjo to reiterate that she meant every word she said.
The 61-year-old also said she is a “straightforward” person who doesn’t involve herself in “bu*****t”. She added that her “forthrightness” is why she has so many enemies.
“No, it is true, I’m telling you. Me I don’t bullshit that’s why I have so many enemies around me, I’m like if I don’t like you, I tell you I don’t like you,” she said.
“You know Burna, you know one thing I wanna tell you after your show in Paris.
“There’s a difference between listening to an album and seeing somebody perform and for me, I differentiate both.
“You can do wonder on the album, but what makes you a different artiste in whole (sic) is when you are on stage and you deliver.
“Sometimes some artistes are able to do it in the studio and then on stage it becomes impossible and I come to your show and I’m like oh my boy is killing them all, I’m liking it.”
Kidjo clinched the ‘Best Global Music Album’ category at the 2022 Grammy Awards.
