Enoch Adeboye, the general overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has addressed his longstanding policy of not employing female personal secretaries.

Speaking on the second day of the church’s ongoing Holy Ghost Congress, themed ‘Jonah Must Go,’ the cleric said his decision was rooted in personal discipline and self-awareness rather than gender discrimination.

Adeboye explained that the pivotal change came with the church’s exponential growth and his consequent demanding schedule at the Redemption Camp in Lagos.

He added his work often stretches into the early hours of the morning, requiring solitude in his office until 2 or 3 a.m.

“From the moment I got to this campground, from the moment I got to a stage where, at nigh,t I still have to work, I ceased to have a female secretary. Some people think it is gender discrimination. I know myself. I know who I was before Jesus saved my soul,” he said.

The cleric said it became necessary to eliminate scenarios where he might be left alone with a woman late at night, noting that such environments could expose anyone to unsavoury situations.

He also recalled having a female secretary during his time in Ebute Metta, describing her as devoted, diligent, and deeply spiritual. Despite this, he said the late-night working conditions still made him uncomfortable.

“I see the possibility of being left alone at night with the opposite sex. Oh, but if you are to get a secretary like the last one I had, she was a wonderful child of God. She was my secretary at Ebute Metta, a wonderful lady, true child of the living God,” he said.

“And when I arrived, I knew I would still be in the office at 3 am. I could imagine, after a long day’s work, everybody finally sees the last visitor. And then my secretary comes at 2 am, ‘we are through now, sir. Is there any way I can help you? Like, you know, a cup of tea to relax?’ Jonah must go.”
