Adebola Ekanola, the deputy vice-chancellor (academics) of the University of Ibadan (UI), Oyo state, has been elected as the acting vice-chancellor of the institution.
The professor was elected on Monday by the senate of the institution — the same day the tenure of Idowu Olayinka expired as the varsity’s VC.
Ekanola was said to have secured 275 votes to beat four other professors nominated for the top position.
While A. Oluleye (former dean, faculty of technology) scored 80 votes to come second, Adigun Agbaje (ex-deputy vice-chancellor, academic) polled 15 votes to place third.
Gbemisola Oke (former deputy vice-chancellor, academic) got 14 votes to come fourth while Olanike Adeyemo (deputy vice-chancellor, research innovation and strategic partnerships) secured 13 votes.
The election process, which held at the varsity’s international conference centre (ICC), was presided over by Olayinka Omigbodun, the provost, college of medicine.
Ekanola’s win is still subject to approval by the varsity’s governing council before it can be confirmed.
