Odira Nwobu, the Nollywood actor and content creator, has passed away in South Africa, five months after surviving a horrific car accident.
The news was confirmed by his manager Arthur Scott to BBC Pidgin on Monday.
Scott said Nwobu had travelled to the country for a shoot with a brand he represented as an ambassador.
According to his manager, the actor had been medically managing high blood pressure, but the precise cause of his sudden death on Monday is currently unknown.
The announcement has sent waves of shock through the entertainment industry and among his fans, as it comes with cruel timing.
Less than 24 hours before his death, the vibrant actor had been actively sharing photos and videos from his trip, making the news of his passing all the more devastating.
It also comes five months after he was involved in a car crash along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in June.
The accident claimed multiple lives, while Nwobu and other survivors were rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. His car was left badly mangled, with the front and side sections completely crushed beyond recognition.
Odira began acting shortly after completing his secondary school education, but gained prominence for his role in ‘Joseph The Dreamer’.
The role earned him a nomination in the Best Comic Actor category at the African Movie Academy Awards.
He has featured in several movies, including ‘Home Alone’, ‘Class Mugu’, ‘Village Rats’, ‘Goat Lover’, ‘Wayward Father’, ‘Ikpo’, ‘Village Priest’, and ‘Family Saga’.
The actor and Gifty tied the knot in 2021 and welcomed their first child together — a daughter— in 2023.
