Ahmed Ololade, the Nigerian singer better known as Asake, has confirmed his relocation to Los Angeles, United States.
The ‘Omo Ope’ hitmaker discussed his new life and perspective in a recent interview with Office Magazine.
Asake noted that the driven lifestyle of Los Angeles is not unlike that of Nigeria, a place “where people are trying to make it every day”.
He expressed a belief that opportunity is universal, viewing every person and place through the same lens of potential success.
The 30-year-old songwriter also revealed that his new Los Angeles home allows him to meet collaborators who help him expand his craft.
“To be honest, it’s still the same thing. Humans are the same. People are trying to make it in Nigeria. People are trying to make it in America. People are rich in Nigeria. People are rich in America. People buy new houses every day in Nigeria. People buy new houses in America everyday,” he said.
“There are so many talents in LA, there are so many talents in Nigeria. I think it’s the same thing, there’s nothing different for me. The only thing I can say is I just get to meet new people and have more exposure like from what I’ve been used to.”
When asked how he remains grounded amid his changing environment, Asake revealed that solitude is key.
The singer said he spends most of his time alone, explaining that this quiet is essential for staying connected to himself.
Asake also credited his early environment for grounding his musical passion. He said he was immersed in the sounds his parents loved, particularly the Fuji music of legendary artiste Ayinde Barrister.
“My dad loved real musicians, you mentioned one of them now, Ayinde Barrister. My mom loved the same sound too,” he said.
“So it’s like if both of your parents liked Michael Jackson, there’s no way if you live with them, you won’t end up liking Michael Jackson.
“Back home, we don’t really have too much power in the house to be able to play any kind of sound you want to listen to.”
Asake’s revelation comes a few days after fellow Nigerian star Ayra Starr confirmed her move to New York, marking a trend of leading Afrobeats artistes establishing bases abroad to broaden their global reach and creative networks.
