Kcee, the Nigerian singer, has expressed his view that “all Igbo people, regardless of their location, are Biafrans”.
In a recent interview on Yanga FM, the ‘Ojapiano’ hitmaker argued that Igbo cultural heritage is intrinsically linked to Biafra, drawing a parallel to how northerners identify with Arewa and the Yoruba with Oduduwa.
“As far as I am concerned, every Igbo man under the sun today anywhere you are in the world, you are a Biafran. I am an Igbo man and Biafra is where we are from. It is just like the Arewas and Oduduwas,” he said.
Kcee’s declaration comes a few weeks after Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of terrorism.
Born Kingsley Chinweike Okonkwo, Kcee gained recognition as part of the duo KC Presh.
The group saw moderate success before splitting in 2011.
Kcee, who currently co-owns a record label called Five Star Music, has released several hit singles, including his 2013 track ‘Limpopo’ and ‘Pull Over’, featuring Wizkid, the Grammy-winning singer.
The singer unveiled his debut album ‘Takeover’ in 2013. He followed up with his sophomore project ‘Attention to Detail’ in 2017.
He has received recognition for his talent. In 2013, Kcee snagged the Headies Song of the Year award in 2013.
He also won the Hip Hop World Revelation award at the 2014 Headies.
