Ebun Oloyede, the Nigerian actor better known as Olaiya Igwe, has revealed why he refused to lend his car to gospel singer Tope Alabi for her wedding.
Earlier this year, the ace Yoruba actor disclosed that his biggest regret was disappointing Alabi after she and her partner requested to borrow his new car for their wedding, to which he initially agreed.
Olaiya shared details of the incident at the gospel singer’s 55th birthday party.
He recounted how Alabi and her partner had visited him at his home in Abeokuta before their wedding to request the use of his car — a Mercedes Benz model known as a V-booth, which featured a customised plate number reading ‘Ololade Mr Money’.
Olaiya, 68, explained that despite their request, he knew he would not be able to grant it due to a traumatic event that had occurred just days earlier.
“Tope is my junior sister. May God not allow you to experience untimely death. When they were about to get married as husband and wife, they stylishly came to me to borrow my car,” he said.
“This car was a V-booth. The plate number was customised with ‘Ololade Mr Money’. Although many people abused me then that the customised number was louder than the car.
“When Tope wanted to do her wedding she came to my house at Abeokuta. I have said this before but I was dragged on social media.
“I asked them when the wedding was holding and they both told me. Inside of my mind, I knew I was not going to lend them because armed robbers just collected the car from me four days earlier.
“We were doing promotion for my movie ‘Osuwon’ then in Ibadan and the car was snatched from me at Yemetu. We got the car the following day.”
He said his primary reason for refusing was concern for the couple’s safety, adding that “I was scared that if I gave the car to Tope, they might snatch it from them too”.
