Yaadman’s new EP, “The Backie Tape,” is his second project of 2025, continuing his steady stream of releases. He remains resolute in his sound, delivering his lines with a fresh and confident style. The EP is rooted in Dancehall, with a touch of Afrobeats. He saves the only feature for the last track, where the rave of the moment, Bhadboi OML, adds his voice to the upbeat coda.

The project opens with “Agba Arugbo,” a boisterous, self-appraising track that uses pop culture in its title. Yaadman has always believed in his skillset, so a song like this is unsurprising; it’s what you expect from a veteran. The repetition of “Ask About Me” lends credence to his claims. For an artist who has been in the music industry for close to two decades, you surely need to ask about him.

Yaadman slurs his words in the opening seconds of “Smooth Criminal,” a plaintive, R&B-themed track. He knows his way around lyrics, naturally finding the right words and expressions for a lady. An audio cut heralds “Everyday,” a track whose production is reminiscent of the early 2000s Galala sounds in Nigeria. On the interlude, the artist freestyles about the aftereffects of herbs.

The clanging percussion of “Painkiller” lifts the mood as the artist revels in hedonism—a relatable theme for anyone who has encountered a nymphomaniac. Throughout this EP, Yaadman is in a blissful state, and on “Lagos To Miami,” he excitedly sings about having fun as the party atmosphere slides into a feeling of “Faaji” (Yoruba for enjoyment).

Yaadman’s “The Backie Tape” is a wonderful mix of songs. The days of struggle seem to be over; gratitude, celebration, and hedonism now rule the day. If anyone is in doubt, a single listen to this project will erase such thoughts.
