Wizkid, DJ Tunez, and DJ Maphorisa, the South African producer, have joined forces to release a new extended play titled ‘South Gidi’.
The three-track project dropped in the early hours of Friday, creating immediate buzz among fans.
The EP, which the artistes have described as a “music fiesta” between Nigeria and South Africa, features the songs ‘Money Constant’, ‘Abangani’, and ‘Fiesta’.
The project also features a roster of talented artistes, including Mavo, Daliwonga, Madumane, Zaba, and Zeh McGeba.
Leading up to the release, the artistes built anticipation by sharing snippets from their recording sessions on social media.
The clips offered a glimpse into the creative process, showing them vibing to the tracks, with one video even capturing DJ Maphorisa enthusiastically trying to learn a new dance.
Musically, ‘South Gidi’ is a fusion of signature sounds. All three tracks are built on the infectious log drums of the Amapiano beat, expertly blended with elements of dancehall. The track ‘Money Constant’ showcases this blend perfectly, opening with Mavo’s musical dexterity in a mix of English and Yoruba, before Wizkid enters with a verse that is a classic call to celebration, urging listeners to “spend the money like it’s nothing” and join the party.
This collaboration is a meeting of powerhouses. DJ Tunez, who has been Wizkid’s official DJ for over half a decade, rose to prominence after his first production, ‘Iskaba’ with Wande Coal.
Wizkid, one of Afrobeats’ revered “big 3,” is a global icon and multiple award-winner.
On the South African side, DJ Maphorisa (Themba Sekowe) is a legendary figure famous for his masterful blend of house music, amapiano, and Afropop.
