A magistrate court in Ifo LGA of Ogun state has convicted and sentenced Habeeb Okikiola, the controversial singer popularly known as Portable, to three months in prison for assault.
However, the court offered him the option of paying a fine of N30,000 instead of serving the jail term.
The charges stemmed from a 2022 incident where the ‘Zazoo Zeh’ hitmaker allegedly attacked Osimosu Emmanuel Oluwafemi in the Okeosa area of Ilogbo, within the Ifo district.
Portable was also accused of stealing musical equipment, including a Yamaha H55 studio monitor, a studio interface connection cable, and an AKG P420 condenser microphone.
Olumide Awoleke, the police inspector, had testified in court that Portable conspired with others to commit the offenses, which violated Sections 517, 351, 383, and 384 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
Delivering the judgment on Wednesday, Babajide Ilo, the chief magistrate, found Portable guilty on two counts of assault.
For the first count, he was sentenced to one month in prison with an option of a N10,000 fine, while the second count carried a two-month imprisonment term with a N20,000 fine option.
Portable was initially arraigned in April 2023 on three charges — assault and theft — as detailed in charge sheet No. MIF/192c/2023.
Although he was granted bail at the time, he failed to appear in court, leading to his remand in the Ogun State Correctional Service. The court, however, dismissed the theft charge due to insufficient evidence.
This is not the first time Portable has faced legal troubles. Recently, he stirred controversy with Fuji musician Saheed Osupa after using a lyrical phrase associated with Osupa’s style, leading to accusations of copyright infringement.
Portable initially insulted Osupa, calling him “big for nothing,” which triggered widespread backlash on social media.
The dispute escalated when Osupa’s team filed a formal complaint, resulting in Portable’s arrest in Ilorin, Kwara, and subsequent remand in prison.
The singer later apologised to Osupa, attributing his outburst to his temper.
