Fireboy DML, the Nigerian singer, says he has “never been in love”.
In an interview on ‘Is This Seat Taken?’ podcast, the ‘Peru’ hitmaker spoke about his perspective on “true love”.
The 28-year-old singer said he feels the fact that love is inherently sacrificial is “messed up”. He also revealed his struggles with love, admitting, “I don’t think I’ve ever been in love”.
“Love means sacrifice to me. I think true love is sacrificial in nature which I think is really messed up,” he said.
Born Adedamola Oyinlola Adefolahan, Fireboy is signed to YBNL Nation, a record label founded by rapper Olamide.
In the interview, the singer also spoke of his relationship with Olamide, describing it as “dynamic”. He lauded his record label boss for being “emotionally intelligent”.
“My relationship with Olamide is very dynamic. Sometimes he is my CEO, business partner and sometimes my big brother,” he said.
“We always find a way to work around those dynamics. He is a really good person and probably the most emotionally intelligent person I know.”
Fireboy is not the only prominent Nigerian artistes who has openly voiced their sentiments on love.
In June, Tems, another Nigerian singer, admitted that she has never been in love.
“I haven’t been in love. Loving someone for me is more of ‘I see you and I still want to be in your life. Even though you annoy me sometimes, I choose you and I choose you,” said Tems during an interview with the YouTube content creator Korty EO.
Ayra Starr also recently revealed she has never been in a fully committed relationship because of her focus on music.
“I want to fall in love. I wrote ‘Lagos Love Story’ about what love would look like if I was. I am a lover girl deep in my heart, I’m just very strong headed about it. I actually have never been in love. I have been in certain situations – not situationships! – but I have never been in a fully committed relationship,” she said.
“I’ve put myself out there and I’ve tried to see what’s there but I don’t think I’ve had the time. I’ve been working since I was 15, I was modelling, I was doing university, and now I’m on the road.”
