Bob Lee, the creator of Cash App, was fatally stabbed in San Francisco in the early hours of Tuesday.
According to a report from NBC Bay Area, a local news outlet, Lee died from apparent stab wounds.
On its part, the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) said officers responded to a report of a stabbing on Tuesday at 2:35 am.
The police said the man was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
“Despite efforts by first responders and medical personnel, the victim succumbed to his injuries,” the police said in a statement.
“This incident is being investigated by the SFPD Homicide Detail.
“No arrests have been made and this remains an active investigation.”
Police did not name the man but sources identified Lee as the victim to NBC Bay Area.
In a Twitter post on Wednesday, Bill Barhydt, CEO of crypto wallet company Abra, expressed his condolences.
He added that Lee was a generous and decent human being who did not deserve to be killed.

“I just got devastating news that our friend Bob Lee (@crazybob ) was killed in SF early today,” he said.
“Bob was a dad, the former CTO of Square where he created Cash App & CTO of Mobile Coin. He was a generous decent human being who didn’t deserve to be killed.”
Bob Lee had a successful tech career.
He was the chief technology officer for Square, a mobile payment app. He had also worked at Google early in his career.
