Hafsat Ismail Tuge, the actress, has become a subject of discussion in Kannywood after her estranged husband claimed he did not give her permission to act.

Kannywood is the term used to refer to the film industry in northern Nigeria; it is headquartered in Kano.

Tuge is a renowned figure in ‘Amaryar Tik Tok’, the popular Hausa TV series.

According to BBC, the drama started recently when Sani Umar Gwarzo, her estranged husband, claimed he was not aware she had started acting.

Gwarzo also said he was shocked when people informed him that they saw his wife in a movie.

“When I got the call, I decided to investigate and confirmed it was actually true that my wife has started acting without my knowledge,” he said.

“I also gathered that she has been telling people that we have divorced which gave her the freedom to act movies. But that is not true.

“She actually took me to the court and requested for a divorce but the process is yet to be completed because she has not paid the money the court asked her to pay.”

In her reaction, the actress said she had divorced the businessman before her foray into Kannywood.

The film star also promised to address the matter in due time.

Weighing into the ensuing controversy, Ahmed Bifa, producer of ‘Amaryar Tik Tok’, said he featured Tuge in the series because she has the necessary certification in Kannywood.

“Her papers indicate she is a registered member of our union and my expectation is that the leadership of the union won’t register her until they have confirmed that she is not married and got the permission of her family to act in movies” he said.

‘WE’RE INVESTIGATING IT’

Addressing the issue, Ismail Afakallah, chairman of the Kano state censorship board, said the matter is under investigation.

“Yes, we got complaint about the issue and we have already started work on it,” he said.

“We have already invited the actress (Tuge) as well as the producer of the series she featured in to appear before us.”

Afakallah said the board has the mandate of protecting the religion and cultural values of the people of Kano.

He added that the board would take the issue serious due to its weight.

“It is against our values and religion for married women to to act movies because marriage is highly sacred to us,” he added.

Babangida Bangis, the movie director, had earlier said it “is a rule in Kannywood” that young married women “can’t act in films but are allowed to be producers.”
