Abdulrosheed Akanbi, the Oluwo of Iwo, has dismissed a viral claim that he asked Gboyega Oyetola, governor of Osun state, for N20 million to finance a proposed wedding.

On Friday, a letter allegedly authorised by the monarch and addressed to the governor, had surfaced online.

The letter, dated February 8, had quoted the monarch as saying he needs financial support to marry a princess of the Ado Bayero dynasty in Kano state.

“I have the instruction of the His Imperial Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, the Oluwo of Iwo, to notify you of Oluwo’s decision to marry a princess from Kano Emirate, to be precise, Ado Bayero dynasty,” the letter read.

“I wish to remind your Excellency that this kind of royal wedding within two notable traditional institutions in Nigeria will require huge expenses, which necessitate the support of the state government financially, even logistically.”

But reacting, Alli Ibraheem, press secretary to the monarch, said the palace did not approve the viral letter.

“We didn’t author any letter. The letterhead you saw is not the one used by Oluwo. Moreso, if Baba will write government, it will carry his signature,” he told PUNCH.

Oluwo was previously married to Chanel Chin, the Jamaican woman. The union, however, hit the rocks in 2019.
