Heritage, who was a 200-level student of the Department of Linguistics and African Languages at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), passed away shortly after she slipped into an open soakaway at BVER, a private hostel within the institution.

Abiodun Olarewaju, in a statement sent to TheCable Lifestyle, on Friday, said the SCID had already taken over the investigation.

He also disclosed that the incident, which occurred on Wednesday, “saddened” the university’s management.

“The owner of the private hostel, BVER, where the incidence occurred has been issued a query by the University Management and his response is being awaited,” the PRO added.

“It must be noted that all the hostels in the student’s village are privately owned and they are not under the control of the University.

“The university management presently has only oversight functions on these private hostels.”

Eyitope Ogunbodede, the vice-chancellor of the varsity, had earlier sympathised with the other students while commiserating with the parents of the deceased.

The VC, who described the incident as unacceptable, promised to critically look into the circumstances that led to the student’s death and mete out appropriate sanctions against those involved or whoever is found culpable.

Ogunbodede appealed to the university community to remain calm and law-abiding as the police investigate.
