It was a movie that was highly anticipated by many film lovers. But in the end, it wasn’t worth the wait. Since the release of the ‘Chief Daddy‘ sequel, social media has been awash with mixed reviews of the project.
The movie, produced by Mo Abudu’s EbonyLife in collaboration with Netflix, was released exclusively on the streaming platform on Saturday.
Directed by Niyi Akinmolayan, the film follows the scramble for the wealth of a billionaire industrialist after his death.
It features several top movie stars including Beverly Osu, Beverly Naya, Dakore Egbuson-Akande, Nedu Wazobia, Chigul, Falz, and Kate Henshaw-Nuttal.
Others are Rahama Sadau, Mawuli Gavor, Funke Akindele-Bello, Shaffy Bello, Zainab Balogun, Joke Silva, Linda Ejiofor, Broda Shaggi, Uzor Arukwe, and the late Rachel Oniga.
When compared to the original version of the movie, released in 2018, the sequel was nothing but disappointing.
Beyond falling below the expectations of many, the project was not the best way for Nollywood — one of the world’s biggest movie industries — to begin the new year.
Despite having a star studded cast, top-notch cinematography, luxurious setting and eye-catching costumes, the film gave the audience a highly predictable and pointless storyline.
The project was a disaster and a sharp contrast to the original version which was unique, hilarious and entertaining.
It was bereft of a main storyline and a central focus while the sub-storylines were disjointed, too many and mostly unnecessary.
In the movie, it seemed as if the writers of the second installment were oblivious of the happenings in the first installment.
This was because there was no coherence in the storyline and roles of the characters. For instance, the reason why Ireti (Zainab Balogun) and Dami Baggio (Mawuli Gavor) seemingly abandoned their kind nature still remains a mystery to us.
Characters like Ekanem (Ini Edo), Donatus and Madam Pat (Patience Ozokwor) were almost non-existent.
Tinu (Funke Akindele-Bello) and Teni (Kate Henshaw-Nuttual) love triangle with the lawyer still remained unclear.
It was as if the movie was a rushed up affair.
Like many, the reviewer is highly disappointed at the screenwriters considering the fact that the trailer raised people’s expectations only to dash such hopes.
The setups and publicity were aimed at pushing the narrative that the sequel of one of the biggest Nollywood movies of 2018, is a must-watch, when in reality, it is a flop.
The project is at best rated 3/10. Those considering to watch it should not expect anything spectacular.
