The Bayelsa state police command has arrested Sunday Ojo, a suspected ritualist, who allegedly attempted to slit the throat of Deborah Emafidon, his undergraduate lover.
Asinim Butswat, the command’s spokesman, who broke the news in a statement, said the suspect was arrested on Tuesday.
According to him, his arrest had followed joint efforts by its operatives and vigilantes at Ogobiri community in the Sagbama LGA of the state.
The police spokesman said the suspect had lured the lady, who is a student of Niger Delta University (NDU), to a nearby bush and allegedly attempted to kill her for ritual purposes.
Butswat said Ojo was trying to behead his girlfriend when the victim was rescued by its men who were alerted by vigilantes in the community.
It is understood that the victim is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in the state.
“The suspected ritualist, one Sunday Favour Ojo, ‘M,’ who hails from Edo State, was arrested on 21st September, 2021, at about 1100hours at Ogobiri-Toruebeni Drive in Sagbama Local Government Area,” it read.
“The suspect lured his victim, one Deborah Emafidon ‘F’ a student of Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island, Amassoma, to a nearby bush, tied her hands and was about to slit her throat when he was apprehended by the vigilante members and Police operatives.”
The spokesman said Eworo Echeng, the commissioner of police, has ordered an investigation into the matter.
