Burna Boy, an award-winning Nigerian singer, has put out the visuals for ’23’, a track off ‘Twice As Tall‘, his 2020 album.
The Grammy-award winner announced the release of the project on Tuesday evening in an inspirational Twitter post.
“If at first you don’t succeed, dust yourself off and try again,” he wrote in the post which reflects the project’s thematic underpinning.
The less than four-minute video sees Burna Boy likening himself to Michael Jordan, former American basketball legend. He also cited the similarity in their quest for greatness despite the odds.
The singer also paid homage to women while reflecting on how Jordan has become an inspiration to many including himself, using his iconic jersey number 23.
The video, which was released in honour of women’s history month, shows an aspiring basketball player who is wheelchair-bound at birth, a young singer and songwriter, a dancer, and a music producer.
“The music make me feel I be Jordan (woro si woro, koro ki loro). Now I understand why them say aiye gbon gan (O boy e plenty for my mind you go jisoro). Nkan ti mori, oloun mi o so tan,” he could be heard singing in a mixture of English, Yoruba and Pidgin.
It is understood that the video was inspired by ‘The Last Dance’, a 2020 documentary, chronicling Jordan’s career strides as a basketball player, particularly his final season with Chicago Bulls.
With strings of awards, recognition, and collaborations, the ‘African Giant’ crooner has established himself as a household name in the global music landscape.
He recently clinched his first-ever Grammy award after winning the ‘Best Global Music Album’ category at this year’s award event.
