Miley Cyrus, US singer-songwriter, says she has no idea what the COVID-19 pandemic feels like, adding that she’s financially stable and can still “put food on the table.”
The 27-year-old spoke to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) about her experience with the lockdown and how difficult it has become for celebrities to admit being privileged amidst people who have lost their jobs due to the pandemic.
The ‘Wrecking Ball’ hitmaker said she recognises that her position of privilege as a celebrity isn’t exactly how the majority of the world is currently handling the crisis.
“I’m sure some people I was reaching out to [for her ‘Bright Minded’ show] felt the same way I do, which is that my experience is so rare. It almost doesn’t feel right to talk about,” said the singer.
”I know I’m in a unique position, and my experience with this pandemic is not like most everyone else’s in my country and around the world.
“This isn’t COVID-19, what I’m experiencing. My life has been pushed pause on, but really I have no idea what this pandemic is like.
“I’m comfortable in my space, able to put food on my table, and [I am] financially stable. That’s just not the story for a lot of people.”
Cyrus’ comments come amid the global economic shakeup that has trailed the pandemic, with the entertainment industry almost brought to a standstill over cancelled shows and stalled releases.
She had made headlines in 2019 following her split from Liam Hemsworth, her ex-husband — less than a year of marriage.
Amid allegations of cheating, the couple parted ways weeks after Cyrus had hinted she’s finding it difficult to fit into the wife stereotype. She had also revealed that she was still sexually attracted to women.
“I can admit to a lot of things but I refuse to admit that my marriage ended because of cheating. Liam and I have been together for a decade. I’ve said it before & it remains true,” she had said.
“It is no secret that I was into partying in my teens and early 20s. I have not only smoked but advocated for weed. I’ve experimented with drugs. Liam and I reconciled. And I was committed.”
