Rita Wilson, wife of Tom Hanks, an American actor, says she had “extreme side effects” from chloroquine after taking the anti-malarial drug to treat COVID-19.
TheCable Lifestyle had earlier reported how the 63-year-old actress tested positive for the virus alongside her husband and were consequently discharged from the hospital after undergoing treatment.
But speaking with CBS This Morning on Tuesday, Wilson, while recounting her experience with the novel disease, said chloroquine had “extreme side effect” on her.
According to the movie star, there’s need to ascertain whether or not the anti-malaria drug is indeed effective in the treatment of COVID-19, the disease caused by coronavirus, before using it.
“I think people have to be very considerate about that drug. We don’t really know if it’s helpful in this case,” she said.

She also explained how her body reacted when she was given chloroquine during her isolation period after complaining of headache.
“But my fever did break. But the chloroquine had such extreme side effects. I was completely nauseous, and I had vertigo. I could not walk, and my muscles felt very weak,” Wilson said.
Her comment comes against the backdrop of several dispute trailing the use of chloroquine for the treatment of COVID-19.
Amidst the dusts, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) had warned against self-medication of the drug, noting it was yet to be officially approved by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
TheCable had also reported how the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the emergency use of the drug alongside hydroxychloroquine for the treatment of the virus.
