Tom Hanks, an American filmmaker known for his comic roles in several Hollywood thrillers, has tested positive for the coronavirus alongside Rita Wilson, his wife.

Hanks took to his Twitter in the early hours of Thursday to disclose the development.

The couple, who are both aged 63, were diagnosed with the disease after they had sought medical attention while experiencing symptoms consistent with the virus in Queensland.

“We felt a bit tired like we had a cold and some body aches. Rita had some chills that came and went. Slight fevers too,” Hanks wrote.

“To play things out right as is currently needed in the world right now, we were tested for the coronavirus and were found to be positive.

“Medical officials have protocols that must be followed. We will be tested, observed, and isolated for as long of public health and safety requires. Not much to it than a one-day-at-a-time approach.”

While the duo have been put in isolation at a Gold Coast hospital, Annastacia Palaszczuk, premier of Queensland, said health officials are working to determine those that have been in contact with them.

“People who have come in contact with Hanks and Wilson will need to self-isolate and quarantine. Hanks has been having a good time on the Gold Coast and we’re lucky to have him in Queensland,” she said.

“From what the chief health officer has told me, it’s over 15 minutes of being in very close contact, so a selfie wouldn’t count like that.

“I’m very confident with the physicians that we have that will be treating Tom and his wife and like I said we wish them all the very best for a speedy recovery.”

Hanks is known for his roles in films like ‘Road to Perdition’ (2002), ‘Cloud Atlas’ (2012), ‘Captain Phillips’ (2013), ‘Saving Mr. Banks’ (2013), and ‘A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood’ (2019).
