Cambridge Analytica, a data company that worked for Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, is shutting down operations amid a data harvesting scandal.
A few weeks ago, Cambridge Analytica and Facebook became entangled in a data-harvesting scandal that compromised the personal information of up to 87 million people.
The company decided to draw the curtain on its operations because it was losing clients and also due to the surmounting legal fees in the Facebook investigation.
SCL Group and SCL Elections, which are affiliated with Cambridge Analytica, also are shutting down in the US and the UK.
Cambridge Analytica and SCL Elections issued a joint statement on Wednesday confirming the companies’ closures.
“Over the past several months, Cambridge Analytica has been the subject of numerous unfounded accusations,” the statement said.
“The siege of media coverage has driven away virtually all of the company’s customers and suppliers. As a result, it has been determined that it is no longer viable to continue operating the business.”
According to BBC, the closure will not stop the investigations.
“We’ve got to make sure this isn’t an attempt to run and hide, that these companies are not closing down to try to avoid them being rigorously investigated over the allegations that are being made against them,” said Damian Collins, chair of the Commons select committee for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).
