Olawale ‘Brymo’ Ashimi has defended his decision to wear nothing but a loincloth in his recent music video ‘Heya.
The singer had trended for performing almost stark naked in the video for the lead single from his sixth album, Oṣó.
While some fans praised his artistic bravery, others criticised his out of the box display.
Reacting during a chat with PUNCH, Brymo said: The song is an expression of my environment. I like to paint as much as I can and I think that most of us are bush people, even though we live in cities.
“The video portrayed a bush man living in the city. If you look around, you wouldn’t see much evidence of civilisation. We did not create most of the things that we use in this country and that’s not good. We need to think.”
When the video was released during the week, a section of the social media had accused Brymo of pulling the stunt for the sake of publicity.
Responding, the singer says he is unapologetic for his act, saying there is nothing wrong with what he did.
He said: “Even if it’s a publicity stunt, is there anything wrong with that? Singers spend a lot of time and energy in the studio. So is there anything absurd in them drawing some attention to their songs?”
The ‘Time is Kind’ singer said the largest market for his music is beyond the shores of Nigeria.
“My albums are doing well and we found that most people, who download my music are in Europe and America,” he said.
Brymo’s Oṣó album is expected to be followed-up by a concert in April, and a book launch in May.
