“Fashion came by way of being deprived… clothes could make you feel like somebody.”
And so the story began for Steven Onoja who grew up putting paper in his shoes to cover up holes in their soles.
“Everything is a learning process”, he says.
A New York-based creative consultant and photographer, Onoja’s style can be described as flamboyant, vintage and cosmopolitan.
He is eclectic in his approach to fashion but still maintains the classic man status in an antique yet modern way. This could all be because image means everything to him.
“It’s up to you to make your own decisions about who you’re going to surround yourself with because your image is more important,” he said in the caption of a picture on his Instagram page.
Onoja’s love for all things vintage is relative to his style. His Instagram page is a testament and visual representation of this.
Motivated by everyday life, culture, and fashion, with a great appreciation of all aspects of design, Onoja’s goal is to be a positive figure that people can turn to for inspiration while fulfilling his dreams.
“Everyone has their own unique style and personal touch to share with the world.”
Born in 1989 in Nigeria, his fascination for fashion dates back to the early 1800s when “the word “colored” began to surface… referring to people of the African diaspora. For some reason the term colored always stuck with me. Not in a derogatory way but in a celebratory fashion.
“Being an artist I love experimenting with colors and textures.”
What Onoja does with his fashion disposition is “provide the vision from an urban perspective, effortless style and look to connect with creative individuals”.
However, he is of the school of thought which believes that “simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. Be more worried about your character than your reputation”.
