The student union government of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, on Monday forced lecturers out of classrooms to demand for a solidarity strike for Anthony Elujoba, former acting vice chancellor.
Elujoba is being tried for corruption on charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The students had earlier called for a two-day solidarity strike in support of the former acting VC but the Association of Staff Union of Universities, OAU branch, had said the action will not hold.
ASUU had in a statement on Sunday said that: “Our union has always maintained a principled position against corruption, and will never attempt to shield or support anyone that is being suspected of, or tried for, corruption.”
But the students, TheCable Lifestyle learned, used branches of trees to chase out lecturers while normal academic activities were ongoing Monday morning.
“The SUG said there is strike, they asked students to boycott all lectures, and chased lecturers out of classes,” a student said.
“The student union said the solidarity strike for the former acting VC must hold. They want him to be freed and they feel this strike is a step in that direction.”
Another undergraduate said the students are fond of Elujoba as a result of his performance while in office.
The student said during his tenure, the institution never went on strike.
“He did so many things in the school. Close to two years, OAU has not gone on strike,” said the undergraduate.
