Fans of Ayo ‘Wizkid’ Balogun are miffed over the absence of Canadian star Drake in the video for ‘Come Closer’, the latest collaboration of both artistes.
‘Come Closer’ was released last week Friday almost three months after it leaked online as ‘Hush Up The Silence‘.
The video which was uploaded on YouTube late on Thursday has generated a storm of comments, mostly criticising Drake for failing to support Wizkid by featuring in the video.
“Wizkid gave drake his biggest hit to date, drake couldn’t return the favour. SMH,” Dougs Steals wrote, in reference to ‘One Dance’, one of the best-selling songs of 2016 which was co-produced by the Nigerian.
‘One Dance’ earned Wizkid his first-ever Grammy award nomination.
But many fans believe Drake, who is yet to promote ‘Come Closer’ on any social media platform, hasn’t shown sufficient appreciation to the Starboy.
Mila Andrew wrote: “Drake you just lost 183 million fans from Nigeria. Any Nigerian who is still your fan we have denounced that person already.”
Seun Seriki was more analytical, putting forward the argument that the video may have been rushed and Drake was possibly unavailable to appear in it.
“Watching this video two questions come to my mind Was it rushed so Wizkid could maintain his international presence? Did Drake ignore featuring in the video? (if yes…Drake is such a scum),” he wrote.
The commenter, however, noted that “Wizkid deserves far better” than he’s getting from Drake.
“Even after begging Drake to come closer he still refused to show up, Wizked grow up and stop wasting your time, work with Olamide, Phyno, Davido, P Square, 2face and forget this Drake of a thing, this is the 3rd time am hearing Wizkid and Drake but I never see u guys in the Video, respect your prestige,” Ikechi Nkwocha wrote.
Another commenter with the user name ‘XISVVCX’, said Drake is known to be absent in videos of songs he featured on.
“Drake does stuff like this all the time. He did it to Future with “Tony Montana,” Migos with “Versace,” and Fetty Wap with the “My Way” remix. He hopped on all those songs and refused to show up to shoot the respective videos. Wizkid is just another artiste in Drake’s playbook.”
An anonymous commenter wrote: “All American artists must respect African artists,we can’t accept making a feat with an artist and you don’t appear in the video is direspectful…Wizkid is selfmade u must respect him.”
Another anonymous commenter described Drake as an “opportunist”, noting that “Starboy shouldn’t rely on him”.
Drake and Skepta remixed Wizkid’s monster hit, ‘Ojuelegba’, in 2015 after which he featured the Nigerian star on ‘One Dance’.
