Ycee, the current winner of Headies’ ‘Rookie of the year’ award, has signed a distribution deal with Sony Music Entertainment.
23-year-old Oludemilade Martin Alejo in 2015 released ‘Jagaban’, a commercially successful song which thrust him into the spotlight.
“Sony Music Entertainment Africa and Tinny Entertainment announce exclusive deal for YCEE. Welcome to the family”, said Sony in a statement posted on social media.
Michael Ugwu, general manager, Sony Music West Africa, said Ycee is the “future of hip hop in Africa”, as he welcomed the singer to Sony.
“I’m extremely proud to welcome Ycee to the Sony Music Entertainment West Africa family. I’ve watched this team grow over the past few years and I am amazed at how they have navigated the industry to reach this stage.
“Ycee is the future of Hip Hop in Africa and will be front and centre of SME West Africa’s strategy as we take Africa to the World”, Ugwu said.
The singer excitedly shared the news of the deal on social media, praising God for the “new chapter” in his career.
“It’s been God every step of the way and he is very much with us in this new chapter. Let’s get it.”
Ycee is the 2015 recipient of the MTV Africa Music Awards Revelation of the Year and was also nominated for the same year’s All Africa Music Awards in the ‘Best Artist in African Pop’ category.
He’s expected to release his first E.P, ‘The First Wave’, under the new label.
Afrobeat singer, David ‘Davido’ Adeleke, is another Nigerian singer who recently signed a distribution deal with Sony.
