In observance of World Sickle Cell Day, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has called on Nigerians to take personal responsibility by knowing their genotype before making marital decisions.

June 19 is World Sickle Cell Awareness Day.

In commemoration of the day, the agency emphasised that sickle cell disorder is entirely preventable through awareness and informed choices.

In an X post, NOA stressed the importance of genotype testing as a crucial step in reducing the risk of sickle cell disease.

“As the world marks World Sickle Cell Day, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) calls on all Nigerians to embrace personal responsibility by knowing their genotype and making informed marital choices,” the post reads.

“Together, we can prevent the needless pain and suffering caused by Sickle Cell Disorder, a condition that is 100% avoidable through awareness and responsible action.”

NOA further highlighted that early knowledge, proper care, and compassionate support can significantly reduce the burden of sickle cell disorder in Nigeria.

“Key Messages: Get tested: Know your genotype before marriage. Love with wisdom: Emotional connection must be matched with genetic compatibility,” the post added.

“Avoid high-risk unions like AS/AS, AS/SS, or SS/SS for the sake of the children yet unborn. Every child deserves a life free from predictable and preventable pain.

“Break the silence discuss genotype openly in homes, faith centres, and schools. Prevention is power one test can save generations.

“With knowledge, early care, and compassion, we can beat the burden of Sickle Cell. Act today. Know your status. Make informed choices. Protect our future.”
