Billboard broke the news in a tweet on Monday, although it had yet to update the chat to capture Wizkid’s hit song.

Hot 100 rankings are based on sales (physical and digital), radio play, and online streaming in the United States.

‘Essence’ is one of the tracks of ‘Made In Lagos’, Wizkid’s last studio album released in October last year.

The 14-track project features global heavyweights like Damian Marley, Skepta, H.E.R, and Ella Mai alongside Burna Boy.

Making the cut with ‘Essence’, Wizkid becomes the first Nigerian hitmaker to score a Billboard Hot 100 entry.

‘Essence’ also becomes the first Nigerian song to make the entry while marking Wizkid’s third appearance on the charts, after Drake’s ‘One Dance’ hit number 1 in 2016.

Barack Obama, the ex-US president, had listed the song among his favourite for 2020.
