WhatsApp has launched its first global advertising campaign amid the backlash trailing its privacy policy.

The spotlight has continued to beam on the platform after it announced that its two billion users must either accept its updated terms and conditions or stop using its application.

The privacy policy had sparked controversy among some users, who expressed concerns that it allows WhatsApp to share their private messages with its parent company Facebook.

The company, however, dismissed such fears, noting that the update is aimed at enabling payments to be made to businesses.

According to Will Cathcart, WhatsApp’s CEO, the new campaign is aimed at reiterating the company’s “commitment to privacy” and giving users “strong security.”

“The first step of keeping people safe is, you have to have strong security, and we think governments shouldn’t be out there trying to encourage tech companies to offer weak security,” BBC quoted him as saying.

“They should be out there trying to encourage or even mandate that companies offer the strongest security possible.”

The campaign is billed to run internationally, starting from the UK and Germany on Monday.

WhatsApp currently uses end-to-end encryption, which implies messages can only be read on the device which sends one and the device which receives it.

The communication model has, however, been criticised by some users who argued that such does not support the fight against illegal sharing of content.

Cathcart explained that the campaign will enable the company to make a case for its use of encryption.
