We’re still vetting VC appointment, says FUTA ASUU amid discord

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) says it is still vetting the process by which the institution’s vice-chancellor was appointed.

Members of the varsity’s ASUU had resisted the appointment of Adenike Oladiji as the new VC of the institution.

Last week, the governing council appointed Oladiji from the University of Ilorin as the eighth substantive VC.

However, the FUTA chapter of ASUU was reported to have kicked against the appointment on the grounds that the new VC came second in the interview conducted.

In a statement issued by Olayinka Adepetu, its chairman, the ASUU branch had faulted the selection process.

However, when TheCable Lifestyle contacted Adepetu on Thursday, the chairman maintained that the FUTA branch of the union was still vetting the process and is yet to come up with an official stance on the matter.

“The union has no part to play in the VC’s appointment. We’re studying everything and we will make a statement as soon as we’re through. It just happened on Thursday. We were never part of it at any point,” the chairman said.

“It’s only when we get the information we start processing it. It’s not like we were in the process throughout. You can’t be involved in a dispute if you don’t know exactly what transpired. We heard the VC was appointed.

“We work on vetting the process. We’re still studying it. When we have the report of our investigation, we can decide if we’re in a dispute or not.”

Oladiji’s appointment makes her the first female academic to assume the seat as the head of the university.
