Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) has reacted to a claim by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that a Higher National Diploma (HND) student of Mechanical Engineering in the institution was arrested and jailed for cyber crime.
In a tweet via its official handle on Wednesday, the anti-graft agency said the student was found guilty of criminal impersonation.
The EFCC also claimed that the student found favour from the judge as he “had missed two examination sessions owing to the criminal charge filed against him”.
“Cybercrime: MAPOLY Student Jailed, Two Others Arraigned in Ibadan. A Higher National Diploma (HND) Mechanical Engineering student of Mashood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) in Ogun State, Olalekan Oladapo Ogunremi, was on Wednesday found guilty of criminal impersonation,” the tweet read.

Reacting to the claim, Musa Ibrahim, head, department of mechanical engineering in the institution, told TheCable Lifestyle that the institution does not offer the course at HND level.
He described the claim as false, adding that the department only operates at the national diploma (ND) level.
“I received the news yesterday evening. Moshood Abiola Polytechnic does not have HND Mechanical Engineering. We have ND Mechanical Engineering that we have been running since the inception of this department since 2008. I have been in this department since 2009,” he said.
“As I am talking to you now, we don’t have HND Mechanical Engineering. I don’t know how somebody says he is a student of HND Mechanical Engineering in MAPOLY, it is not true.”
Kafilat Taiwo, vice president of National Union of Campus Journalists (NUCJ) and a student of the institution, also said the claim by the EFCC is untrue.
“The information is not true. MAPOLY doesn’t offer HND in Mechanical Engineering. They only have ND in Mechanical Engineering,” she said.
A Twitter user called for caution, adding that the anti-graft agency should desist from defaming the institution with its claim.
“Do Not Defame Mapoly. MAPOLY does not offer HND in Mechanical Engineering, hence this story does not add up as it is a clear tool by haters to bring down the glory of the New MAPOLY. Let’s be guided,” the tweet read.
“Lol… I think the guy handling @officialEFCC twitter is off duty today so I guess it’s musa that tweeted this,” another user wrote.
Meanwhile, past and present students from the institution have flooded the social media platform to register their displeasure over the gaffe.
Below are twitter reactions:

Fact finding is the Hallmark of reporting.
The said guy is not a student of MAPOLY has rumoured. We wont fold arms to see you deliberately tarnish the image of the institution for no tenable fact or justifiable reason.
Even the names are contradicting.#MapolyMyPride#irepMapoly— Damiliola Segun (@DhermieSneh08) October 17, 2019
Our tweets might not be given appropriate response. But if the sch lawyer should take steps definitely @officialEFCC will act accordingly. Pls don't add up to the problem of the sch by tarnishing its image. We don't have HND for mechanical engineering 🙄😏🤭#IRepMapoly

Please don't tarnish the image of the school, this is too much for the school to bear. I enjoin this body to do the needful by apologising to the institution on all the National dailies.

It is a pity that @officialEFCC has decided to publish this without confirming if the convict is actually a student of @MAPOLYinfo! For your info, MAPOLY does not offer #mechEng in HND, as such there is no HND Mechanical Engineering student(s) in our school! #DontdefameMAPOLY

This is extremely unprofessional!!! How would @officialEFCC upload a story that involves a prestigious tertiary institution with great level of defamation without even taking proper measures before doing it. As matter of fact, the school does not have any HND student for Mech-Eng

This is so pathetic,if you can't really make findings to get better details about a criminal. My institution, Moshood Abiola Polytechnic does not offer Higher National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering. Please don't dent the image of our dear citadel of learning.
