The premiere of ‘Adire’, a highly anticipated movie by Jack’enneth Opukeme, the fast-rising actor, was held on Sunday in Lagos.
The Afrocentric-themed event, which took place at the Filmhouse Cinema, Circle Mall, Lekki Phase 2, was graced by some of the crème de la crème of Nollywood, music stars, influencers, and key industry players.
Some of the celebrities in attendance were Adunni Ade, Isaac Olayiwola, Odunlade Adekola, and Deyemi Okanlawon.
Others were Gabriel Afolayan, Mike Afolarin, Damilola Ogunsi, Toolz Oniru, and Seyi Awolowo.
The movie will be aired across cinemas on November 3, starring Kehinde Bankole, Yvonne Jegede, Femi Branch, Tomi Ojo, and Funlola Raimi, among others.
‘Adire’ is co-produced by Mimi Bartels and Barbara Babarinsa Hassan, and directed by Adeoluwa Owu.
The film chronicles the life of a retired prostitute who moved to a small town and started a lingerie-making business — made from her signature adire material — which empowers conservative women.
Her tale would eventually anger Folasade, the deaconess and wife to the preacher of the town’s local church. Àdìrẹ soon discovers the most unusual friendships and love in the unlikeliest of places.
Speaking with TheCable Lifestyle, Opukeme revealed that Àdìrẹ was crafted from a “trance” he had while staying at a friend’s place.
He said the storyline was inspired by an “experience of wanting change and wanting people to be much more accepting and loving”.
Opukeme said ‘Àdìrẹ’ is also aimed to promote the African culture through its “fabric and language”.
“I had loved to tell this story always because it felt nostalgic for me. So I was lying in my friend’s house one day… People would say it is a trance or a dream or whatever. But I saw this lady walk up to me with her back park, her luggage and said her name was Àdìrẹ and she wanted to tell me her story and that was it,” he said.
“Looking back I realised that Adire has always been a part of me. I grew up in the church. And I had firsthand seen the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to organised religion. So I think it is all of those experiences, wanting reform, wanting change, wanting people to be much more accepting and loving. To actually do what God expects us to do. I think Àdìrẹ came from that place.”
‘Adire’ is FilmOne Entertainment’s first original movie.
