FAKE NEWS ALERT: Viral document on price list not from us, says WAEC

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has debunked a document suggesting that it released a new price list.

The amendment price list document — which shows WAEC’s name and logo — was widely circulated on social media on Tuesday.

The document showed the correction of date of birth is now pegged at N70,000, while the attestation of result costs N80,000.

Other prices on the list include correction of name (N30,000), correction of gender (N30,000), confirmation of result – international – (N39,000), sealed scratch card (13,000), and confirmation of result – local – (N19,500).

Reacting, the examination body referred to the document as ‘Fake News,’ adding that “it did not emanate from WAEC-Nigeria”.

In a post on X, WAEC said it does not “entertain requests for date of birth amendment” as purported in the document.

“Please note that this document did not emanate from WAEC-Nigeria. The Council still does not entertain requests for date of birth amendment,” the post reads.

In 2021, WAEC increased its registration fee from N13,950 to N18,000 due to the rising inflation in the country.

The exam body said the worsening inflation rate in the country was to be blamed for the hike in registration fees.

“There has to be that marginal increase to enable us to do better services. The examiners are now happy as we are able to increase their marking fees through this marginal increase,” Patrick Areghan, head of WAEC’s national office, had said.

“The money actually went for the payment of examiners to enable us to satisfy them so that they can do the job better.”

In March, the body also suspended the manual confirmation of certificates.
