Members of the Phaneroo Ministries, a church in Uganda, have attempted to break the Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest applause.

During a service on Sunday, which was themed “Clap for Jesus”, the congregation appeared to have clapped non-stop for 3 hours and 16 minutes.

Phaneroo Ministries’ attempt is to surpass the 2 hours and 5 minutes record set by Stevens Clark, who showcased his clapping prowess during a UK festival in 2019.

In now-viral footage, the church members could be seen clapping without vocal noise, stomping, or musical instruments.

Phaneroo Ministries said it sought approval from GWR before embarking on the feat.

Although the GWR is yet to comment on the church’s attempt, it is believed it can take up to 12 weeks for the British reference book to review the documentation and decide whether it has been accepted as a new record or rejected.

On July 12, GWR issued a cautionary post for people to avoid unnecessary record-a-thons.

More Nigerians have taken a shot at the GWR after Hilda Baci surpassed her predecessor to set a new time for the longest cooking marathon by an individual.

In May, Baci pulled off a 100-hour attempt to set the new record, dethroning India’s Lata Tondon’s 87 hours 45 minutes previously set in 2019.

Shortly after Baci’s feat, Damilola Adeparusi, another chef, started her cooking marathon for five days.

Then came Adeyeye Adeola who also attempted to upturn Baci’s record in a 150-hour spell.

In the same vein, Temitope Adebayo, a chef based in Ibadan, announced his intention to cook for over 120 hours.

Hassan Joshua Bature, a computer science lecturer at the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), also revealed plans to undertake a 150-hour teaching marathon.
