The Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNU) has called on the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to end the ongoing strike.

ASUU had on February 14 declared a one-month warning strike to protest the non-implementation of its demands by the federal government.

But on March 14, the union extended the industrial action by eight weeks, citing the government’s failure to fully address its demands.

In an interview with NAN on Sunday, Samuel Edoumiekumo, chairman of the CVCNU, said it is crucial for both parties to come to an agreement to end the strike as soon as possible.

Edoumiekumo, who is the vice-chancellor of Niger Delta University (NDU), also urged them to honour agreements entered into for academic activities to commence in the affected universities.

“We have already given a press release arising from the meeting of the general assembly of the committee,” he said.

“We said that ASUU and the federal government should amicably resolve all lingering issues.”

He also expressed optimism that the issues which led to the strike would be resolved soon.

The two-week extension of the strike by ASUU would end on May 14.

Chris Ngige, minister of labour and employment, had on Friday said the federal government and the union would resume negotiation this week.
