Will Stevens, the United States consul general, has picked Tems as his favourite Afrobeats artiste.
Stevens recently hosted Bright Okocha, the Nigerian comedian fondly called Basketmouth, at the US consulate in Lagos.
The two engaged in conversations surrounding the consul general’s favourite locations, food, and artistes in Nigeria.
Responding to Basketmouth on his favourite artiste, Stevens mentioned Tems, adding that the songstress “is incredible and one of the best”.
He said although he has met with some top Nigerian artistes, “Tems is the one that I can tune in anytime”.
He revealed that his favourite song by Tems is her rendition of Bob Marley’s hit ‘No Woman, No Cry’ in the sequel of Black Panther.
“It is got to be Tems. That voice… I got a little bit of crush. Just listening to her on the ‘Black Panther when she sings ‘No Woman, No Cry’… the Bob Marley. She is incredible. She is one of the best,” he said.
“I have met a bunch of them Fireboy, Asake, Davido. I have not met Burna Boy but they are great guys. Wonderful people. I know Nigerian artistes and I can jam to them a little bit. But Tems is the one that I can just tune in anytime.”
Born Temilade Openiyi, in February 2023, the songstress won her first-ever Grammy award.
She bagged the ‘Best Melodic Rap Performance’ category for her role in ‘Wait for U’, the 2022 hit song by Future featuring Drake.
In March, the singer was honoured with a ‘Breakthrough Award’ at the 2024 Billboard Women in Music Awards.
