A student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has been shot dead by a suspected armed robber while reportedly trying to recover a stolen phone.
The student, identified as Adekunle, was said to have been shot on Saturday along Harvey Road, Moore Road Junction, in the Yaba axis of the state.
It is understood that Adekunle and Opeyemi, another UNILAG student, had boarded a shuttle going to the school from Yaba.
While on their way, a man, said to be hanging at the back of the vehicle, had forcefully collected an iPhone 7 plus belonging to Opeyemi.
Adekunle was said to have jumped out of the vehicle to pursue the fleeing robber in a bid to recover his colleague’s phone.
In the process, however, another man believed to be working with the fleeing robber shot Adekunle in the head.
The 23-year-old student was said to have died on the spot.
Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos state police spokesperson, confirmed the student’s death to TheCable Lifestyle on Tuesday.
Hundeyin said there is an ongoing investigation into the matter. He also disclosed that no arrest has been made so far.
“Yes, it is true that the student was killed. No arrest has been made so far, we are still investigating the matter,” he said.
