The governing council of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has confirmed Folasade Ogunsola as the acting vice-chancellor of the institution.

The council, led by John Momoh, chief executive officer of Channels TV, who was recently appointed as its acting chairman, okayed Ogunsola’s nomination during a virtual meeting on Tuesday.

The development comes ahead of the inauguration of a visitation panel constituted to probe activities of the institution from 2017 to date on Wednesday.

The senate of the institution had on Monday elected Folasade Ogunsola, the institution’s deputy vice-chancellor for development services, as acting VC.

Ogunsola, a former provost of UNILAG College of Medicine, garnered 135 votes to defeat Ben Ogbojafor, who polled 31 votes during the keenly contested election.

The development makes her the first woman to occupy the number one position in UNILAG.

Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, the suspended VC of the institution, was earlier removed by the varsity’s governing council during a meeting presided over by Wale Babalakin, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

The council had thereafter named Omololu Soyombo as the acting VC.

Buhari had directed Ogundipe and Babalakin to step aside and allow the senate of the university to nominate an acting vice-chancellor.

On Saturday, Soyombo said he had stepped down “with immediate effect” in obedience to the directive of the president.
