The University of Jos (UNIJOS) has approved the instalment payment and a further reduction of fees for its students.
The development was announced in a notice on Wednesday.
The Jos-based federal university also said two percent of the amount payable by all students would be dedicated to assisting indigent students.
It said 50 percent will be channeled towards providing scholarships for indigent students while the other 50 percent will be utilized for the expansion of its work-study programme.
UNIJOS, over the past week, joined a list of public varsities that raised their fees over sustainability considerations.
The university raised fees from about ₦45,000 to ₦160,000 for returning students and ₦200,000 for new entrants.
Students at the federal institution, however, took to their campus to protest, demanding a reversal of the fee hike.
“This is to inform Students of the University of Jos, Parents and members of the public that the University Administration has approved a further revision in the School Charges structure payable by Undergraduate Students of the institution from the 2022/2023 Academic Session,” the institution said in the notice.
“The University Administration approved a reduction in the charges following a meeting with the expanded Students Union Government Executives of the University.”
The varsity said the decision came after a meeting with student union government executives.
UNIJOS said the main charges for returning students not offering GST courses have been reduced from ₦150,000 to ₦95,000 while ₦100,000 will be paid by returning students offering GST courses.
Fresh students will now pay ₦130,000, down from the initial charge of ₦180,000.
Laboratory/studio/workshop charges are now set at ₦25,000 for students who exclusively use these facilities, down from ₦30,000.
The university administration said it has also introduced instalment payments.

UNIJOS added that all returning students without GST courses, who use laboratory/studio/workshop facilities, are to pay ₦95,000 as the first instalment and ₦35,000 as the second instalment.

The varsity added that the deadline for the registration exercise has been extended by two weeks.
