Nollywood actress accuses policemen of assault, claims they threatened to shoot her

Umukoro Onome, a Nollywood actress, has alleged that some policemen in Lagos threatened to shoot her after seizing her car.

In an Instagram post made on Sunday, Onome shared videos of herself slugging it out with uniformed men and showed the bruises she allegedly sustained from therefrom.

She said, at 8:30 pm on Saturday, she was approached by the policemen who demanded money but later seized her car without telling her exactly what she did wrong after she had refused to yield.

Onome said she suffered a similar fate in 2018 but could not take legal action because she had no video evidence.

“I don’t know why I will be scared to stay in my own country. Yesterday, at around 8:30, I saw these policemen collecting money from people. So they stopped to collect money,” the actress wrote.

“I told them I didn’t have. They asked me to give them my car key. I told them I can’t and asked what my offence, the man said I should just hand over my car key.

“The next thing that policeman Philip said was that they should have killed me. I said, ‘Sir, do you know me before? Why would you wish me dead?’ The next thing he did was to push me.

“My sister came videoing everything. When they saw her videoing, they collected her phone and beat her up. Is this right, please?

“They’ve taken my car to the station, said they would destroy my car today. That he will shoot me and that even Governor Jide Sanwo-Olu can’t do anything.”

Onome’s account stretches the list of public figures who have, at some point or the other, decried police brutality — including Illbliss, CDQ, Ikechukwu, Broda Shaggi, and Peter Okoye.

In April, a student reportedly committed suicide after narrating his experience with officials of the Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS) which he claimed cost him monies he couldn’t refund.
