A federal high court in Ibadan, Oyo state, has remanded three candidates for alleged exam malpractices during the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

NAN reports that the candidates are: Peter Aniboro, Tunde Popoola, and Seun Akinola.

Oluwafunke Fawole, the police prosecutor, told the court that the defendants were arraigned on a three-count charge of stealing, cheating and examination malpractices.

The police counsel said the trio were arrested in May at Clofam College, Agbalayun, Apata in Ibadan.

Fawole added that the defendants were allegedly caught copying already prepared answers sent to them through their cell phones.

The prosecutor said the offences contravened sections 390, 383 and 516 of the Criminal Code Cap. 38 Laws of the Federation.

Ruling on the matter on Wednesday, Uche Agomoh, the presiding judge, admitted each of the defendants to bail of N500,000 with two reliable sureties in like sum.

The judge noted that one of the sureties must be a civil servant while the other must be a family member.

Agomoh ordered that the defendants should be remanded until the meet their bail conditions.

The judge then adjourned the case until September 26 for commencement of trial.

The development comes days after the West African Examination Council (WAEC) handed over 20 school officials allegedly aiding and abetting malpractice to the police for prosecution.
